Social and Cultural Unconscious in Chinese Femininity

Activity room 10, G/F Block J Jao Tsung-I Academy

This lecture focuses on an important dimension of the individuation process of Chinese women: separation from the mother. Within the individuation of Chinese women, the relationship with the mother becomes a central issue in the development of female autonomy and individuality. It is reflected in issues of marriage and family among Chinese women. Across East Asia, birth rates have declined to the lowest levels in the world, and the rejection of marriage and childbearing has become a collective phenomenon in contemporary Chinese societies.
The mother is both the giver of life and the transmitter of patriarchal values. To embrace the mother seems to be to embrace tradition. Thus, love and hate, attachment and resistance become intertwined, forming a knot from which daughters struggle to free themselves.
Drawing on clinical observations and cultural phenomena, the speaker will explore Eros as the “third” that makes it possible to move beyond the mother–daughter entanglement, and examine how Analytical Psychology assists contemporary Chinese women in moving through the cultural unconscious toward a true and integrated self.
